Leona M. Juneau made her journey home on December 2, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was the 3rd child out of 5, born March 9, 1941, in Saint Ignatius Mt, to Samuel Nicolas Hewankorn and Helen Couture Charlo. She spent her younger years traveling with her family as they traveled to many different places for work.
Due to the BIA forcing children to leave home and attend school, Leona spent her school years in the Urslines. Despite the bad experiences that others had at school that was not the case for Leona. She was very grateful for the skills acquired in cooking and sewing. Leona completed school up to the 8th grade.
After school Leona moved on to work many different jobs. She spent time working in orchards, social work, community health, child advocacy, bartending, truck driving, combine driving, waitressing, and many more. In 1958 Leona gave birth to her first child Lydia Hewankorn.
Leona married Eugene “Jim” Juneau in Coeur d’Alene, ID at The Little White Church. Again, Leona traveled and lived in various places for work. She and her husband lived in Missoula, Blue Bay, California, Oregon, and Washington just to name a few.
In 1966 Leona settled down with her husband and made Worley, ID home. There she had her 3 youngest children, Sam (Susan) Juneau, Lavonne (JSon) Heffner, and Doug (Will) Juneau.
Leona has 6 grandchildren: Terry Hewankorn, Kiowa Incashola, Seneca (Donald) Stanger, Shane Juneau, Robert Hampton, and Elisabeth Hampton. 7 great grandchildren: Daizey (Tim) Hewankorn, Odessa Kenmille, Drake Kenmille, Darrin Hewankorn, Amadeus Old Shoes, Paul Old Shoes, and Alannana Stanger. 1 great-great grandchild, Numa Melton. Nieces and nephews, Tom Johnson, Sam Charlo, Christopher Tenas, Francis Tenas, Byron Tenas, Colleen Tenas, and Antoine “Tony” Tenas
After suffering a stroke Leona moved back to Elmo to live with her oldest daughter, Lydia. There she spent her time watching her favorite shows and her favorite basketball team (The Zags), watching her great grandchildren play sports on NFHS, teaching her dogs Kootenai, and helping raise her two youngest grandchildren “Nana and Numa.”
Leona was very knowledgeable about her family history and genealogy. She will be greatly missed for her on hand knowledge.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Eugene and Henry, two sisters Florence and Christine, niece Alvina “Cissy” Johnson, and infant nephew Francis.
She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, great-great grandchild, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held in Elmo, Mt starting with a wake and rosary on Wednesday the 3rd, funeral mass Thursday the 4th at 10:00 am, and laid to rest at Dayton Cemetery.
