Robert (Bob) David Ellingham, age 95 passed away peacefully at his home in Polson, Montana with family present on October 2, 2020. Bob was born on September 17, 1925 to Lillian and Robert H. Ellingham in Illinois. He grew up in the Chicago and Blue Island area. He enlisted in the US Navy on June 30, 1943 and served in World War II as a Gunners Mate on the USS Hancock. He was a former Midwest Midget racing champion for four consecutive years, 1954 through 1957. Bob was the champion of the Car Owners and Drivers association. Bob moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and married Sharla (Sam) Holmes in 1960. Bob opened Charleston Paint and Body shop in Las Vegas in 1967. Bob and Sam enjoyed vacationing in Park City, Utah. Bob was an avid downhill skier. Bob and Sam then settled in Conner, Montana in the late 80's and later in Polson, Montana in 1995. It was a place for family and friends to gather. Following Sam’s passing on October 17, 2008, Bob continued to spend his summers at their home in Polson.
Bob enjoyed spending time with family and friends, gardening, skiing, watching racing, reading, working outdoors, swimming, walking, fishing, boating, jet skiing and so much more. He also loved everything about nature and animals of all kinds. He lived life to the fullest and his door was always open to family and friends. One of his favorite sayings was "be happy!” He truly wanted that for everyone.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian and Robert H. Ellingham, his sister Jill Ellingham and his beloved wife Sharla (Sam) Ellingham. He is survived by his son, Tom Ellingham, grandchildren Trevor Ellingham of Las Vegas, Nevada and Shane (and Jim) Fischer of Connor, Montana and four great grandchildren Kayla, Kadence, Georgia Bea, and Kota Fisher of Conner, Montana.
Bob was cremated and requested no formal service. The family will gather in the spring of 2021 for a small, private ceremony. The family requests no flowers or gifts, however donations to Bob's favorite charities in memorial of him would be appreciated. Charities that Bob supported: American Cancer Society, Schriners Hospitals for Children and St, Jude’s.
The family sends their deep gratitude to the hospice staff at Frontier Hospice of Kalispell, Montana for their compassion and care for Bob in his home during his last days. Also, thank you to the Lake Funeral Home of Polson, Montana for their arrangements for cremation. Many heartfelt thoughts of appreciation to family and friends for their love of Bob and Sam over the years. They loved you and you have all been a blessing!
