Virginia “Ginger” (Ostrum) Wittman, 92, died peacefully in her sleep on August 8, 2026, at St. Joseph Assisted Living in Polson, Mt. She left her lifetime home in Absarokee to spend her final year in the care of her family, where she made many new friends and learned to love her new home. To no one’s surprise, she became the face of the facility within a month of her arrival. The month of July was full of large family gatherings that she was actively involved in.
Ginger was born on January 2, 1934 (her claim to fame) in Columbus. She grew up on the ranch in Roscoe and spent her entire life in Absarokee, where she worked at the Absarokee Medical Clinic until she retired. She was one of four siblings. She married Larry Wittman in 1955 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed, married, and will be buried. Ginger was an active member her entire life. She was the President of the 1-man AHS Booster Club and received the ‘Super Fan’ award from the Mt High School Association. She moved into Homestead Lodge for the last decade of her time in Absarokee and found a solid family network there, where she stayed very active in the community.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years; parents, Emma & Cornelius Ostrum; three siblings, Mardell Irvin, Darlene Lamping, and Hubert Ostrum.
Surviving family include Sheila & Mike LeBrun, Scott & Kay Wittman, Shelly & Jay Fallihee, and Shawna & Gene Woodard; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Absarokee on August 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. Private interment will follow the reception at Rosebud Cemetery. Memorials may be offered to the Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the Larry Wittman Scholarship Fund that they manage.
